Surfing in the Maldives

With Maldives best known tropical beaches, sublime surrounds and constant waves, doesn’t Maldives make a seamless surfing destination for you?

The climate of Maldives is mostly year round sunny which makes Maldives a better surfing destination.
Charter boats can be hired to take you to different surfing points giving you excellent options of exploring more breaks without a crowd.

The waves are best between February to October, peaking between March and August, In the North and South Male’ Atolls.

The central atolls of Meemu, Thaa and Laamu have the ability to produce the longest swell periods due to the fact that it sits between the Northern and Southern Atolls. The area has secret spots that only genuine charter operators are aware of.

Gaafu Dhaalu Atoll (Huvadhoo Atoll) picks up more swell than any other atoll in the Maldives from every direction. And is best during March through Mid-August through to November.

The best surfing spots in Maldives include:

Cokes
It is located near the island Thulusdhoo and is known as one of the best waves in the Maldives. This is recommended for intermediate and experienced surfers when the swell is big.
Characteristics;
Type: Hollow and barreling
Direction: Right-hander
Best wind direction: South and North

Jail Breaks (where Kanbili Guesthouse is located)
This is also known as prison point located in the island Himmafushi. These waves are one of the fastest waves in the Maldives.
Characteristics;
Type: Hollow Barreling
Direction: Right Hand

Ninjas/piddlies
This point is recommended for beginners and long-boarders. And is also known as the favorite of Japanese surfers
Characteristics;
Type: Right Hand
Best wind direction: West and North West

Beacons
This one is for advanced surfers as this one has a shallow reef. Located in Huvadhoo Atoll.
Characteristics;
Type: Hollow Barreling
Direction: Right hand reef break

Chickens
Located in viligilimathi Huraa, this just might be one of the best waves in the world. This is recommended for intermediate and advanced and experienced surfers.
Characteristics;
Type: Hollow Barreling
Direction: Left hand reef break

Honkeys
Some say this is the best waves of Maldives, situated at the island Thaburudhoo. The waves are super long and is suitable for all levels of surfers.
Characteristics;
Type: Ordinary
Direction: Left Hand
Best wind direction: All directions
